For more than a decade now, Vibe Magazine has covered the world of hip hop and R&B and has vibed followers of these genres with features on both seminal and popular artists as well as latest information on the goings-on in this side of the music industry. Founded in 1993 by music magnate Quincy Jones, the magazine has featured such famous performers as Michael Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Eminem, Mariah Carey, The Fugees, Brandy, and Snoop Dogg.
Vibe Magazine, we can say, has out-vibed its closest rivals because of its broader coverage of music. The Source and XXL for instance focuses on rap music while Rolling Stone is more into rock and pop icons.
The publication has claimed a circulation of 800,000 in 2007 and continues to command its own niche in music publishing. It also has its own share of big-shot advertisers such as Cognac and Dolce and Gabbana.
Aside from its monthly magazine, Vibe stays on the radar with its published books on hip hop music and culture. Some of the vibed topics include the history of hip hop, how women figure in this genre, and the story of iconic rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. Vibe has also launched its own award show, the Vibe Awards which started in 2003.
